the following is an e-mail written to my dear friend amber who has just begun her ph.d. at rice university - it was an attempt to brighten her day while detailing the craziness of mine...

dear amber,
here, i'll paint you a picture (with words of course...since my artistic ability is lacking).....so that you can be entertained.
jelena has 2 cats (scout, and little sushi), 2 dogs (ubu and dakota), 5 fish tanks, and a bob. as of yesterday late in the day, jelena found out that wendy (bob's sister) had some news. Some background: "mom" (bob and wendy's maternal counter-part) is coming to town from michigan this weekend. "mom" is bringing sydney (aka scaredy cat) to be re-united with wendy (& rufus - her cat) after 5 years apart. anyway, so yesterday, wendy gets call at work saying repairman set off sprinkler in her apartment, it went off for 45 minutes and the entire place is under 2 inches of water - antiques, etc all ruined. so wendy goes and moves in with her best friend for the next week. jelena goes and rescues rufus from the living room where he is sitting on an island of safety in the middle of the wet. now "mom" is staying with jel and bob for the entirety of the weekend instead of wendy. also, sydney is too. so jelena now (or within a matter of hours) has FOUR cats (scout, and little sushi and rufus and sydney), 2 dogs (ubu and dakota), 5 fish tanks, a bob, and a bob mom. let's make sure i don't forget to mention the required trip to the grocery store to stock the house for the guests (and i'm sure i need to buy more kitty litter too), plus the fact that "mom" will be in a few hours before bob comes home from work, plus the fact that jelena needs to clean the house for another hour or so so that it's at least presentable, plus the accounting homework - which requires 11-13 hours per assignment. yes, yes. this is the picture. jelena thinks she may stop in for a stiff drink on her way home from work before entering the insanity that is about to become her life for the weekend.
